What makes a successful leader?
Everyone leads differently, depending on their industry, team and individual styles. However, there are certain qualities that a successful leader should show towards their team, that will get them on your side almost every time. There is no right or wrong way to lead as long as your method works for you and your team.
What does it take to be the person that others wish to follow?
Being easy to read:
Not only does that person need to have the necessary knowledge and skills required to do the job and be adept at task management, but moreover, it is usually their actions that determine their standing as a leader in the organisation in which they operate.
Some of the more admirable qualities of a leader can include simply being transparent and clear in what you expect from your team members. This means operating daily with no agenda other than wishing for the best from your team and yourself alike. Being an honest, reliable individual allows your team to know what you expect from them, with no hidden meanings or chance for confusion.
Having the ability to keep calm and communicate:
Having a high level of ‘coolheadedness’ is also a quality considered worthy of respect in a leader. No one is likely to follow the person in charge who panics at the first sign of a problem or business challenge, so being cool under pressure instils a sense of calm in others. You must be able to work under pressure and communicate with your team in moments of chaos, stress and crisis in order to enable your team to stay calm.
Having good presentation skills:
Being a leader will inevitably mean that you are called upon to create presentations or deliver some sort of speech to both small and large groups of people. Therefore you must acquire the skills to be able to do this. Communicating your vision and business objectives with clarity and enthusiasm will help your team to adopt the same attitude as you rather than strategic objectives being delivered in a timid or unsure manner, causing uncertainty.
Having a good attitude to feedback:
A successful leader would encourage feedback on several issues, from their behaviour to decision-making skills. If you surround yourself with people who are comfortable telling you what they think, rather than what they think you want to hear, then you are more likely to receive open, honest and accurate feedback. The key to receiving feedback is that you must listen to it all, no matter how much it may hurt your pride. You can then decide on which way to go with it. When presented in the right way there is usually something in the feedback you receive that you can work on positively.
